Autumn Foods

Fall is a time to draw into your home and self and to focus mentally. Eating sour flavored foods can help accomplish this. Foods such as sourdough bread, sauerkraut, olives, pickles, leeks, aduki beans, salt plums, rose hip tea, vinegar, cheese, yogurt, lemons, limes, grapefruit, and sour varieties of apples, plums, and grapes. Do remember less is more. Small amounts of strong foods, such as these sour flavored foods, can have a strong effect.

Fall is also a time of dryness. So it is a good time to eat foods which moisten. These include soybean products (tofu, tempeh, and soy milk), spinach, barley, millet, pear, apple, persimmon, loquat, seaweeds, black and white fungus, almond, pinenut, peanut, sesame seed (try the sesame seed bread at Earth Fare), honey (local honey is good, it helps if you have seasonal allergies), barley malt, rice syrup, milk and dairy products, eggs, clam, crab, oyster, mussel, herring, and pork. Using less salt will also help prevent dryness.

This list of foods comes from Paul Pitchford's Healing with Whole Foods: Oriental Traditions and Modern Nutrition.
